Self-exclusion is a responsible-gambling tool that lets a player voluntarily block their own access to gambling accounts for a fixed period (commonly 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years). In Ontario, AGCO operates a centralized self-exclusion registry that applies across all registered operators.
Also known as: voluntary exclusion, self-ban
Once enrolled, the operator must refuse new bets, return any deposited but unwagered funds, and block account access for the full term. The exclusion cannot be reversed during the locked period.
Ontario’s Centre for Responsible Gaming runs the cross-operator self-exclusion list (PlaySmart). Alberta’s AGLC runs a parallel program through PlayAlberta. Provincial lists do not cross-talk; a player who self-excludes in one province may still access operators registered elsewhere.
