Is sports betting legal in Canada?

iCanBet does not make a categorical Canada-wide legality claim. Bill C-218 changed the federal single-event betting framework in 2021; each province sets its own access model. Ontario operates an AGCO-regulated market with an iGaming Ontario operator directory. Alberta readers should use the current official source and its stated scope before relying on platform-specific information.

Which sports betting sites are legal in Ontario?

The iGaming Ontario directory lists regulated operators and gaming websites available to eligible players located in Ontario. The live directory listed 49 operators and 84 gaming websites in the October 16 source check, with iGO marking the directory accurate as of September 1, 2026; iGO also publishes monthly market-performance reports, including July 2026 tables. Verify the current directory before registering.

What is the minimum age to bet on sports in Canada?

The minimum legal age depends on province and product. Ontario iGaming requires players to be 19 or older. Always verify your province’s legal age and operator eligibility rules before opening or using an account.

Are sports betting winnings taxable in Canada?

For most recreational bettors, gambling winnings are not treated as taxable income in Canada. However, professional bettors whose gambling constitutes a business may have tax obligations. Consult a qualified tax professional for your specific situation.

Can I bet on the NHL legally in Canada?

Yes, NHL betting is available through regulated Canadian sportsbook channels where eligible. Market depth varies by province, operator, event, and account status, so verify local availability before comparing moneyline, puck line, totals, period betting, player props, or futures markets.

How do I deposit money at a Canadian sportsbook?

Interac e-Transfer is a common Canadian funding rail, but availability, speed, limits, fees, and withdrawals depend on the sportsbook cashier, KYC status, bank processing, province, and account review; Interac says some e-Transfers may take up to 30 minutes. Verify the cashier before depositing.

Quick Answer

Single-event sports betting access is province-specific. Bill C-218 changed the federal framework in 2021; check the official source for your province before you register. [S1]. Ontario has the most mature market, and the October 16 source check found 49 regulated operators and 84 gaming websites in the iGaming Ontario directory, which iGO marked accurate as of September 1, 2026. iGO also publishes July 2026 market-performance tables. Alberta readers should use the current official source and its stated scope before relying on platform-specific information. To bet legally, use a sportsbook registered with your province's gaming authority, be 19+, and set responsible gambling limits before you start.

The Legal Landscape: How Canada Regulates Sports Betting

Before 2021, Canadians could only legally bet on sports through parlay-style wagers at provincial lottery terminals. Single-event betting — wagering on the outcome of one game — was prohibited. That changed on August 27, 2021, when Bill C-218 received Royal Assent, amending the Criminal Code to allow provinces to regulate single-event sports wagering. [S1]

Each province controls its own framework. Ontario moved first, opening a regulated market on April 4, 2022, operated jointly by the AGCO and its subsidiary, iGaming Ontario (iGO). In the October 16 source check, the iGaming Ontario directory listed 49 regulated operators and 84 gaming websites, marked the listing accurate as of September 1, 2026, and published July 2026 market-performance tables. [S2]

Alberta readers should use the current official source and its stated scope before relying on platform-specific information. Do not infer partner or domain status from a market-wide statement. Other provinces, including British Columbia, use different provincial models.

How to Choose a Licensed Canadian Sportsbook

Not all offshore or grey-market sportsbooks are safe to use. A licensed operator provides legal recourse if disputes arise, keeps your funds in segregated accounts, and must comply with responsible gambling standards set by the regulator, including AGCO standards, sport/event betting integrity controls, prohibited-bet restrictions, and event-integrity review where applicable. [S4]

Checklist: Verifying a Licensed Sportsbook

✓For Ontario, check the iGaming Ontario directory before depositing
✓Confirm the exact domain, not just the brand name, against the regulator directory
✓Confirm the cashier supports your preferred payment method, limits, fees, and withdrawal route
✓Verify Play responsibly tools, self-exclusion routing, and limit controls before wagering
✓Read withdrawal policy, KYC steps, and account-review terms before relying on payout timing

For a deeper look at vetting sportsbooks, read our guide on spotting unlicensed operators. For payment guidance, see our Interac betting guide.

Understanding Odds Formats Used in Canada

Canadian sportsbooks typically display odds in American (moneyline) format. A negative number shows how much you must wager to win $100; a positive number shows how much a $100 wager returns in profit.

Favourite (e.g., -140)

You wager $140 to win $100 profit. The favourite is expected to win, so the payout is lower relative to the stake.

Underdog (e.g., +120)

A $100 wager returns $120 profit. Underdogs carry higher payout potential because they are less likely to win.

For a full breakdown of odds formats including decimal and fractional odds, see our Canadian betting odds guide.
