How to play roulette, in short

Roulette is a chance game: a ball drops into a numbered pocket on a spinning wheel, and you bet on where it lands. You can bet on a single number, a colour, a group of numbers, or odd/even. Choose a European (single-zero) table for a lower house edge, place your chips before betting closes, and remember that every spin is independent — no system or pattern changes the odds. It is entertainment, not income.

Choose Your Wheel — European or American

European roulette has 37 pockets (0–36) and a single zero, giving a house edge of about 2.70%. American roulette adds a double zero (00) for 38 pockets, raising the house edge to roughly 5.26%. The rules of play are identical; the only difference is that extra pocket. Where you have the choice, European roulette returns more to players over the long run.

Buy In and Place Your Chips

At an online table you set a chip value, then click the area of the felt where you want to bet. You can place several bets on a single spin — covering numbers, colours, columns, or ranges at the same time. The dealer (or the software) marks the cut-off point after which no more bets are accepted for that spin.

You can combine multiple bets on one spin; each is settled independently.

Understand Inside vs Outside Bets

Inside bets sit on the numbered grid and cover one to six numbers — higher payouts, lower chance of winning. Outside bets sit around the grid (red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36, columns, dozens) and cover large groups of numbers — lower payouts, higher chance of winning. New players often start with outside bets to extend playtime.

Inside = bigger payout, lower odds. Outside = smaller payout, higher odds.

Wait for the Spin and Settlement

Once betting closes, the wheel spins and the ball settles in a numbered pocket. Winning bets are paid at the published payout for that bet type; losing bets are collected. Each spin is an independent event — on a certified RNG or live wheel, the previous result has no bearing on the next one.

Every spin is independent — there are no "due" numbers or hot streaks.

Common Roulette Myths

"A number is due if it hasn’t hit in a while"

Truth: False — each spin is independent. The wheel has no memory of past results.

"Betting systems beat the house edge"

Truth: False — systems like Martingale change bet sizing, not the underlying odds. The house edge is unchanged over time.

"Red and black are exactly 50/50"

Truth: False — the green zero (and 00 on American wheels) means even-money bets win slightly less than half the time.

"American and European roulette pay the same"

Truth: Partial myth — payouts are identical, but American roulette’s extra 00 pocket nearly doubles the house edge.

Is online roulette legal in Canada?+
In Ontario, online roulette is offered by operators registered with iGaming Ontario (iGO) and licensed by the AGCO. In Alberta, regulated online gambling falls under the AGLC. Can a roulette betting system guarantee a profit?+
