Volatility (also called variance) measures how often and how large a slot’s payouts are. A low-volatility slot pays small wins frequently; a high-volatility slot pays rarely but with much larger hits. Volatility is independent of RTP — two slots with the same RTP can feel completely different.
Also known as: variance, risk profile
High-volatility slots demand bigger bankrolls because losing streaks of dozens of spins are normal. They are popular with bonus hunters because a single hit can clear a wagering requirement.
Low-volatility slots are gentler on bankrolls and friendlier to extended play. They rarely produce session-defining wins but rarely produce session-ending losses either.
Reputable game studios publish volatility ratings (typically 1–5 or low/medium/high). AGCO certification does not mandate disclosure, but most studios publish it voluntarily.
