Why did 90-minute and to-qualify markets settle differently in the knockouts?

A standard match-winner market settles on regulation time only, while a to-qualify market follows the team that advances after extra time or penalties. The final is the clearest example: 0-0 after 90 minutes settled the match-winner market as a draw, while Spain’s 106th-minute extra-time goal settled to-lift-the-trophy markets on Spain.

Who won the 2026 World Cup final?

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026. Substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute. It is Spain’s second World Cup title after 2010.

Stage	FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter-Finals (recap)
QF winners	France, Spain, England, Argentina
Champion	Spain beat Argentina 1-0 (aet) in the final
Core caveat	90-minute and to-qualify markets settled differently

Quick answer: the quarter-finals were won by France, Spain, England, and Argentina. Spain then beat France in the semi-finals, Argentina beat England 2-1, and Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final — a reminder that a 90-minute match-winner market can lose even when a team goes on to qualify or win the trophy in extra time or on penalties.

This recap intentionally omits quarter-final and Spain–France semi-final scorelines because they were not independently verified for this page — confirm those on the FIFA match centre before repeating a specific result. The final result (Spain 1-0 Argentina aet, Ferran Torres 106') and the Argentina 2-1 England semi-final are confirmed.

Quarter-final results

France beat Morocco — Thursday, July 9

France won at Boston Stadium in Foxborough to reach the semi-finals. Morocco were the side that eliminated Canada 3–0 in the Round of 16, so Canadian recap and settlement search intent flowed into this quarter-final. Confirm the final scoreline on the FIFA match centre rather than a secondary source.

Open guide

Spain beat Belgium — Friday, July 10

Spain won at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood to advance toward the final, where they went on to lift the trophy. Verify the confirmed scoreline, lineups, and market-settlement labels against official FIFA match-centre pages rather than assuming a result.

Open guide

England beat Norway — Saturday, July 11

England won at Miami Stadium to reach the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Argentina. Check whether a settled price referenced a 90-minute three-way market or a to-qualify market before comparing how totals, props, or live options were graded.

Open guide

Argentina beat Switzerland — Saturday, July 11

Argentina won at Kansas City Stadium to advance all the way to the final. Switzerland had reached this stage from the Vancouver Round of 16 match at BC Place, a 0–0 draw with Colombia settled 4–3 on penalties — the same 90-minute-vs-to-qualify distinction that shaped how this quarter-final and the rest of the knockout rounds were priced.

Semi-finals — July 14–15

Spain beat France to reach the final (scoreline not independently verified here — confirm on the FIFA match centre). Argentina beat England 2-1 on July 15 in Atlanta to set up an all-South-American-vs-European final.

Final — Spain 1-0 Argentina (aet), July 19, MetLife Stadium

The 90-minute match ended level, so the standard match-winner market settled as a draw; extra-time and to-lift-the-trophy markets settled on Spain after Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute. It is Spain’s second World Cup title, after 2010.

Knockout betting markets explained

90-minute match winner

The standard soccer moneyline is usually a three-way 90-minute market: Team A, draw, or Team B. Extra time and penalties do not count unless the label says otherwise.

To qualify

A to-qualify or to-lift-the-trophy market follows the team that advances after extra time or penalties. The July 19 final is the clearest example: the 90-minute match-winner market settled as a draw, while the to-lift-the-trophy market settled on Spain after their extra-time winner.

Totals and both teams to score

Quarter-final tactics tend to tighten. Totals and BTTS can price game state, finishing quality, and whether a favourite is likely to control tempo after scoring first.

Cards, corners, and player props

Knockout matches can deepen prop menus, but cards, corners, shots, and player markets are sensitive to referee assignment, lineups, substitutions, and tactical approach.

Knockout-round recap checklist

Confirm final scorelines, venues, and lineups for every quarter-final, semi-final, and the final on FIFA match-centre pages before repeating a specific result — this recap intentionally omits scorelines that were not independently verified.

Check whether a graded market was 90-minute, to-qualify, or outright before assuming how a price settled.

Remember that live markets suspended around goals, VAR, penalties, red cards, and major injury stoppages throughout the knockout rounds.

Use responsible gambling tools and set a budget before betting on future tournaments; knockout stakes can feel more urgent than group-stage matches.
