How online gambling works in BC

British Columbia uses a provincial monopoly modelfor online gambling. The Province of British Columbia says gambling is legal only when run by the provincial government. BCLC conducts and manages commercial gambling, including lotteries, casinos, and online gambling; PlayNow.com is the only legal online gambling site in B.C. An August 27 source check also confirmed IGCO’s online gambling service page redirects from the former government internet-gaming URL to the current IGCO site.

The Independent Gambling Control Office (IGCO) is British Columbia’s independent gambling regulator. The province says the modernized Gaming Control Act came into force on April 13, 2026, transitioning the former regulator to IGCO and establishing the current oversight framework for commercial gambling, charitable gambling, horse racing, and responsible gambling programs.

Private operators — including brands widely advertised across Canada such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and bet365 — are not licensed to serve BC playersunder the provincial framework. BC has not enacted legislation equivalent to Ontario’s iGaming framework (launched April 2022) that would allow private operators to obtain a provincial licence.

BC players seeking legal, regulated online gambling should use PlayNow.com. It is the only platform where play is covered by provincial consumer protections, responsible gambling tools administered by BCLC, and IGCO regulatory oversight.

July 6 BC source check

BC is a PlayNow-first market, not an open private-operator market

Our July 6 review checked IGCO’s current online-gambling service page, the B.C. gambling overview, PlayNow.com, Gambling Support BC, and Interac e-Transfer guidance. The legal player route remains PlayNow.com through BCLC; private operator advertising may reach B.C. audiences, but advertising is not proof of a B.C. licence.

For practical next steps, use iCanBet’s Canada legal framework, age-rule, responsible-gambling, Interac, and payout-timing pages. Payment timing should stay conditional: Interac availability, KYC, operator approval, account status, and bank processing can all affect deposits or withdrawals.

BC vs Ontario: Why the Models Differ

Ontario opened a private licensed iGaming market in April 2022. British Columbia has not followed that path. Understanding the distinction matters before drawing conclusions about operator availability.

British Columbia (BCLC operator / IGCO regulator)

→Provincial monopoly — BCLC is the only licensed online gambling operator

→PlayNow.com only — one regulated online platform for casino, sports, poker, and lottery

→Regulator: IGCO — BCLC conducts and manages PlayNow while IGCO independently regulates gambling in the province

→Age 19+ — provincial minimum

✓Responsible-gambling support — Gambling Support BC helpline is available 24/7

Ontario (AGCO / iGO)

✓Open private market — multiple private operators licensed under iGaming Ontario (iGO)

✓Many operators available — FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, bet365, and others legally licensed

–Regulator: AGCO — Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario; active compliance fines record

–Age 19+ — same minimum age as BC

→Per-operator self-exclusion — no centralized system; sister-brand gaps remain

Important: BC players and private operator advertising

Private operators advertised across Canada — including on national television, sports broadcasts, and digital media — are licensed in Ontario and operate under iGaming Ontario. Their advertising reaches BC audiences, but private-operator advertising is not a BC licence signal and does not mean they are licensed to accept BC players.

BC players seeking legal online gambling should use PlayNow.com, operated by BCLC. iCanBet does not list or recommend private operators for BC residents, as those operators do not hold provincial licensing to serve this market.

British Columbia gambling FAQ

Is online gambling legal in British Columbia?

Yes, online gambling is legal in British Columbia — but only through PlayNow.com, the platform operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). Private operators, including well-known brands such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM, are not licensed to serve BC players. BC has not opened its market to private licensed operators the way Ontario did in April 2022.

What is PlayNow.com?

PlayNow.com is the online gambling platform operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). The Province of British Columbia describes PlayNow.com as the only legal online gambling site in B.C. PlayNow offers casino games, sports betting, poker, and lottery products.

What is the legal gambling age in British Columbia?

The legal gambling age in British Columbia is 19+. This matches Ontario and most Atlantic provinces. It is one year higher than Alberta (18+) and Manitoba (18+). Age verification is required when creating an account on PlayNow.com.

Why aren't FanDuel, DraftKings, and other private operators legal in BC?

British Columbia has not passed legislation to open a private licensed iGaming market. Unlike Ontario, which created the iGaming Ontario (iGO) framework in 2022 allowing private operators to be licensed under AGCO oversight, BC maintains a provincial monopoly. Under this model, only BCLC holds the authority to conduct and manage online gambling for BC residents. Private operators that accept BC players are doing so outside the provincial regulatory framework.

Will BC open a private iGaming market like Ontario?

As of July 2026, there is no confirmed timeline for BC to open a private licensed iGaming market. The BC government has not announced legislation equivalent to Ontario's iGaming framework. Readers interested in monitoring this should follow announcements from BCLC (bclc.com) and the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, which oversees the Independent Gambling Control Office (IGCO).

What responsible gambling resources are available in BC?

BCLC operates GameSense, its responsible gambling program integrated into PlayNow.com and all BC casinos. PlayNow includes Manage Your Play and GameSense links, and IGCO administers Gambling Support BC services. For crisis support, the BC Problem Gambling Helpline is available at 1-888-795-6111 (toll-free, 24/7).
